Emmanuel Franco – baritone
Felicia van den End – flute
Mirsa Adami – piano
Pamela Smits – cello
Two seasons ago, Emmanuel made a big impression with his rendition of Olli Mustonen's Taivaanvalot, together with Pamela on the cello and the composer behind the piano. It is therefore no surprise that Emmanuel has been reinvited to make this wonderful world trip together with the other top musicians!
A Creole nightingale or a drunken bard, dancing in a gypsy neighborhood in Granada or the beach of Cadiz, unrequited love or erotic temptations in the hot air of Madagascar, you can experience it all in these folk songs from all over the world. We even take a trip under water!
The musicians combine their talents in the sensual Chanson de Madécasses by Maurice Ravel. The texts, taken from the 18th- century Creole poet Evariste-Desire de Parny, are a cry for liberation from colonialism, exploitation, and slavery as they occurred in Madagascar.
Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) is a composition George Crumb wrote for three masked players; electric flute, electric cello, and amplified piano. The flute and cello represent the whale sounds, the arpeggios on the piano depict the water. The musicians must be masked to minimize human influence. Or as Crumb stated: “The masks, by effacing a sense of human projection, will symbolize the powerful impersonal forces of nature (nature dehumanized).” This concert will surely be memorable.
